This short jian is probably made in the late Spring and Autumn Period (B.C. 771-475). In this period, most short jians in regions around Inner Mongolia and Gan Su Province were straight, with guards and geometrical patterns. They were often of about 20 cm long and their handle could be round or flat.

This jian is still very hard and rigid although rust tint of various colours is found all over the jian. The blade is still a bit sharp. The end of the handle is not straight. It seems that there should be a pommel but is now missing.

There is symmetrical geometric pattern over the handle and the guard. Lines are found also at the two lateral sides of the handle.

This is a very good dao which demonstrates the level of sword-making technology at the Western border of China around 1200 A.D. Many traces of combat are seen on the blade even after thorough polishing. This speaks for the history of this dao. Beautiful forge patterns and hamons are clearly seen. The blade is also very sharp.

The handle, guard and pommel, as well as the copper fittings on the scabbard, are original. The scabbard is lacquered recently.

The thickness and the weight of the blade are just good for practising. The handle is rather thick and is comfortable for gripping.
